About Fale Scholar
Fale Scholar is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a bold and compassionate mission: to remove the financial, cultural, and institutional barriers that prevent talented Tongan students from pursuing nursing degrees in the United States and returning home as highly skilled, culturally rooted healthcare professionals. At its core, Fale Scholar believes that a student’s calling should never be limited by geography or economics, especially when that calling is to serve others in need.
For many young Tongans, the path to becoming a nurse is blocked not by lack of commitment or ability, but by the stark realities of cost and access. Nursing programs in the U.S. are expensive, and international students — including those from Tonga — often do not qualify for traditional financial aid. On top of tuition, they face the cost of living, student visa and accompanying legal fees, transportation, and the challenge of adapting to a new culture and education system all at once. Without support, these challenges can derail even the most promising students.
Fale Scholar exists to open the doors that would otherwise stay firmly closed. The nonprofit identifies high-performing, compassionate Tongan students — young people whose academic record, character, and sense of service show they are poised to make a real impact in healthcare. Once selected, students receive comprehensive support that goes well beyond a check for tuition. Fale Scholar ensures that visas and legal requirements are handled; school supplies, textbooks, and other essentials are provided; and students are enrolled in a local nursing program in Southwest Washington. Housing, meals, and community are also arranged, including room and board in a Christian home where students can focus on their studies without the burden of daily survival logistics.
This isn’t just a scholarship. It’s a cradle-to-clinic support system designed to turn anxiety into focus, fear into confidence, and distant dreams into a professional license and meaningful work at the patient’s bedside. When students don’t worry about how to pay rent or navigate a new healthcare culture, they can devote themselves fully to mastering the skills that save lives.
The impact of this work reaches far beyond individual achievement. Tonga faces persistent health challenges, including high rates of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity — conditions that have strained families and communities for generations. Preparing nurses who understand both the clinical demands and the cultural context of Tonga allows Fale Scholar to multiply its impact. Graduates return home not just with technical expertise, but with the cultural insight and lived experience to work effectively within their communities, contribute to public health education, and partner with the Tongan Ministry of Health to improve outcomes across the islands.
Every dollar donated to Fale Scholar transforms a life — and often, many lives. Your gift directly supports tuition, legal immigration processes, housing, academic materials, and the holistic care necessary for students to thrive. Your generosity places highly trained, culturally competent nurses into hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities that urgently need their skills. It strengthens Tonga’s healthcare system by building competency from within, rather than relying solely on external aid.
Imagine a young Tongan student, miles from their family, keeping pace with demanding clinical rotations and exams while struggling with unexpected bills. Without support, their journey can end not because they lack talent or determination, but because the system was never designed to help them succeed. With your support, the story changes entirely: stress is relieved, potential is unlocked, and a future nurse can walk confidently into a profession that heals others and uplifts communities.
Your contribution — at any level — becomes a catalyst for change. It broadcasts a powerful message to Fale Scholar recipients: you are seen, you are supported, and your community believes in you. In supporting Fale Scholar, you help launch nursing careers that will touch thousands of patients and help shape a healthier future for Tonga.
Together, we can turn barriers into bridges, dreams into degrees, and hope into lasting impact. Thank you for your generosity, your compassion, and your commitment to a healthier world through the mission of Fale Scholar.
